Welcome to Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, a town founded, financed and governed by African-Americans.

In 1908, Colonel Allen Allensworth and four other settlers established a town in California’s Central Valley. Their dream of developing an abundant and thriving community stemmed directly from a strong belief in programs that allowed Black people to help themselves create better lives. Colonel Allen Allensworth and the community of Allensworth represent a significant chapter in the history of African Americans in California and the United States.

Begin your journey in the early twentieth century in California’s Central Valley. Today, a collection of lovingly restored and reconstructed buildings – including the Colonel’s house, Phillip’s house, and a historic schoolhouse - gives new life to the dreams of these visionary pioneers of California's Central Valley.

NOTE: This program is best suited for grades 2nd-12th.
