Discover the incredible treasure hidden in the walls of one of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park’s adobe buildings for nearly 100 years – not gold or jewels but two historical documents! They help tell the story of Allen Light, a Black man from the United States who came to Mexican California as a sailor, making a life as an otter hunter and even earning the favor of the governor before becoming San Diego’s first recorded Black business owner. Through Light, students will learn about sea trade in the early 19th century, its importance to Black American communities, and daily life and business in Mexican-period California.
