Allensworth and the California Buffalo Soldier Trail

In the years following the American Civil War, the famous all-African American army regiments, popularly known as the Buffalo Soldiers, eventually made their way to California where they would serve in the state's newly established public lands and park system. This program will discuss their historic trails through the great State of California, and their remarkable accomplishments and contributions to the infrastructure and preservation of the most iconic national parks in the state- Yosemite, Sequoia/Kings Canyon NPS, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. We will also discuss the extraordinary career of Civil War Veteran and Buffalo Soldier Chaplain Colonel Allen Allensworth, who built and developed schools throughout the American West (including Angel Island State Park in San Francisco Bay), and later founded a town for the Buffalo Soldiers and their families here in the great Central Valley. Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.
