Understanding Hydroelectricity at the Folsom Powerhouse
Join us for an electrifying program about the power of the past here at Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park! During this program, we will learn all about the three main elements: water (movement), magnets, and copper, which were used at the powerhouse to generate electricity. Together, we will also take a close look at the original 1895 facility, including our massive penstocks, turbines, and original generators, which worked to generate 3 megawatts of electricity at 800 volts. Students will learn about the difference between Alternating Current and Direct Current, and why both are still used today! Additionally, when comparing our 3-megawatt powerhouse and modern-day plants that produce ten times the power. We will also explore how powerhouses, new and old, use renewable resources and the benefits and challenges that face us in California’s energy future. Please come prepared to engage! This program is designed for grades 6-8.
