Tar, Not Just a Nuisance!
PORTS On-Demand registration is closed for the fall semester.
Join us as we discover the active tar seeps at Carpinteria State Beach and discuss whether this resource has been a convenience or a nuisance to the animals, plants, and humans that inhabit this area historically and currently. Students will observe a series of photos and participate in group, pair, and independent thinking to decide whether the tar represented in the photo is valuable or an annoyance. Throughout the program, we will discuss local geology, Pleistocene animals, the Chumash culture, and asphaltum mining. This interactive program is designed for 4 – 8 grade students.
