Allensworth: A California African American Town

Welcome to Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, a town founded, financed and governed by African Americans.

In 1908, Colonel Allen Allensworth and four other settlers established a town in California’s Great Central Valley. Their dream of developing an abundant and thriving community stemmed directly from a strong belief in programs that allowed blacks to help themselves create better lives. Colonel Allen Allensworth and the community of Allensworth represent a significant chapter in the history of African Americans in California and the United States. Begin your journey in the early twentieth century in California’s Great Central Valley. Today, a collection of lovingly restored and reconstructed buildings – including the Colonel’s house, Phillip’s house and historic schoolhouse - once again dots this Central Valley farm country, giving new life to the dreams of these visionary pioneers.

During this program, students and their teachers are welcomed to a memorable learning experience about California's African American community of Allensworth.
