Lesson Three-Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Objectives
By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

  • Learn that tide pools face challenges from humans and pollution.
  • Discuss one "good tide pooling rule" with table groups.
  • Research and create artifacts to show how California State Parks and other agencies help to preserve tide pool ecosystems.
  • Prepare and ask/answer State Park Interpreter questions to further understanding.

    Time Required
    50-90 minutes (plus additional day to finish culminating project)

    Between a Rock and a Hard Place movie
    Public Service Announcement Project PowerPoint

    Procedure
    1. Share link or download and watch the movie: BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE.

    2. Discuss the movie "Between a rock and a hard place" with table groups. Brainstorm and choose a culminating tide pool topic to research. Students can share their topic out to class, and begin work on short problem-solution research projects that will incorporate how California State Parks and other agencies work to preserve tide pools. Refer to the Public Service Announcement Project PowerPoint for directions.

    3. In preparation for the videoconference, have your students prepare questions relating to tide pool ecology that they could potentially ask the State Park Interpreter.

    4. Follow up: Students will finish their Public Service Announcment projects and share with the class within one week after the videoconference.
