Lesson Five: You Should Write a Book

As an extension of the earlier lessons, and to bring closure to this unit, have the students write a children's book version of either their researched bill or their proposed bill.  Their audience will be 4th and 5th graders.  The twist in this narrative/expository task is that they must write their book from the point of view and voice of the bill.  You might want to share Schoolhouse Rocks' I’m Just a Bill - for an example of how to give voice to a bill.  Students can create their illustrated storybooks by hand or electronically.  To help organize their thinking and storyline, have them complete the Storyboard Handout as a pre-writing activity.
